Miami Opens Against No. 1 Tonight: Hurricanes vs. Gators in Tampa, 6 P.M. on ESPN2
The 71st meeting of Florida and Miami is a season opener with the volume turned up: the Gators arrive as the AP's preseason No. 1, the Hurricanes arrive ranked and 26-9 deep in Year 2 of Jai Lucas — and the last meeting, a 14-point Florida win, is the tape both benches know by heart.

Most season openers are auditions. Miami's is an examination. The Hurricanes open the 2026-27 season Monday night in Tampa against Florida — the No. 1 team in the Associated Press preseason poll — in the Orion180 Tipoff Classic at Benchmark International Arena, tipping at 6 p.m. ET on ESPN2 with Tom Hart and Jimmy Dykes on the call and ESPN+ and Fubo carrying the stream. Miami arrives ranked itself, No. 14 in the AP poll and No. 17 in the coaches poll, off a 26-9 first season under head coach Jai Lucas that ended in the NCAA Tournament's second round. Florida's last season was louder and ended earlier than expected: an SEC regular-season title, then an upset loss in the Round of 32.
The recent history is Florida's, and it is specific. The Gators beat Miami 82-68 in Jacksonville last November, and they lead the all-time series 48-24 heading into the 71st meeting. Oddsmakers have read the same tape: DraftKings installed Florida as a 5.5-point favorite, with the moneyline at Florida -230 and Miami +190. The matchup the previews keep circling is in the frontcourt — Miami freshman Shelton Henderson against Florida standout Thomas Haugh, two of the best forwards in the college game, as GatorsWire put it — and Miami's interior answer includes Malik Reneau, last season's team leader at 18.9 points and 6.5 rebounds a game, who sat out an exhibition with a lower-body injury but has been cleared for the season, per Field Level Media's Top 25 file.
What a win or a loss means in November is smaller than what the game itself proves: whether Year 2 of the Lucas turnaround travels — whether a team that won 26 games a season ago can stand in a neutral arena with the country's top-ranked roster for 40 minutes. Miami does not wait long for its home answer either: the Hurricanes are back in Coral Gables on Friday, November 6, hosting Wagner at 9 p.m. on ACC Network. But the season's first sentence gets written tonight, in Tampa, against No. 1.
