Marlins Outright Five Players Off the 40-Man Roster as the Offseason Opens, With Alcántara's $21 Million Option Picked Up
Miami cleared two catchers and three right-handers off its 40-man roster to open the offseason, while the club's $21 million option on ace Sandy Alcántara for 2027 has been exercised after his 214-inning season.

The Miami Marlins' offseason housekeeping has begun with five names off the 40-man roster. The club has outrighted catchers Logan Driscoll and Brian Navarreto and right-handed pitchers Tyler Zuber, Wikelman González and Zach Brzykcy, according to the team's transaction log at MLB.com, as reported by MLB Trade Rumors. All five cleared waivers and are likely headed to minor league free agency.
The two catchers saw little to no big league time this year: Driscoll, added in a cash swap with Tampa Bay just before the deadline, did not appear in the majors, and Navarreto totaled 61 plate appearances while crossing three years of major league service. Zuber's removal was the expected one - after the season, the Marlins announced he was slated for an internal brace procedure to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, a recovery that will cost him the majority or entirety of the 2027 campaign.
The roster trimming sits alongside the decision that anchors the winter: the Marlins have exercised Sandy Alcántara's $21 million team option for 2027, the club announced in transaction notes reported by MLB.com. Alcántara finished the year with 33 starts and a 3.87 earned run average, leading Major League Baseball in innings pitched at 214 and tying for second in starts - the workload that makes the option, and the ace's place at the top of Miami's rotation, the starting point for everything else the club does this offseason.
