Nine Killed as Learjet Crashes Into a Greenacres Mobile Home Neighborhood; NTSB Takes Over the Investigation (Miami Watch News)

All nine people aboard a Learjet 60 were killed on Sunday after the plane crashed into a mobile home neighborhood near Greenacres in Palm Beach County, according to federal authorities. The crash happened around 12:50 p.m. Eastern in the area of Military Trail and 10th Avenue North, causing major destruction, including fires and scattered debris, USA Today reported from the Palm Beach Post's coverage. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said all nine people on board the plane were killed, and as of 4 p.m. Eastern on Sunday there had been no confirmation of fatalities among people on the ground.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the Learjet 60 had departed Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and was headed to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate, and the NTSB will be in charge of the investigation and will provide all updates, the agencies said. No victim names were released in the reporting read Sunday afternoon, and no cause has been given - that determination belongs to the NTSB's investigation.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office said the crash closed all lanes of Military Trail in the area of Cresthaven Boulevard and 10th Avenue North, and authorities told motorists to avoid the area and seek alternate routes. Weather in the West Palm Beach area on Sunday afternoon was overcast with rain and lightning in the area and winds from the east at 15 miles per hour, gusting to near 25, with visibility at 7 miles, according to the National Weather Service in Miami - conditions reported here as the afternoon's weather picture, not as any finding about the flight. Greenacres sits roughly 60 miles north of Miami in the station's South Florida coverage area, and this story will be updated as the NTSB releases confirmed information.
