John Washington III Says Courts Need Guaranteed, Independent Funding So No Branch Can Squeeze Another
Presidential candidate John Washington III says Congress controlling the courts' funding leaves the justice system dependent - and he is calling for guaranteed, independent funding for all three branches, with public accountability.

Presidential candidate John Washington III is arguing that the way the courts are funded is itself a threat to checks and balances. When Congress controls the courts' funding, the justice system can suffer, John Washington III wrote, pointing to 2025, when he said the federal courts had to scale back paid operations because of a funding lapse.
"That's not balance. That's dependence," John Washington III wrote. If one branch can squeeze another financially, he argued, then checks and balances start to crack. He asked readers to picture themselves in court without a $10,000 lawyer - not knowing all the rules while prosecutors do - and said judges must be free to protect constitutional rights, not worry about politics or budgets.
His proposal, as he stated it, is guaranteed, independent funding for all three branches, with full public accountability but no political retaliation. "This isn't unlimited money," John Washington III wrote. "It's about protecting the people's rights and restoring real independence among the branches."
