Is There School on Election Day? Not for Miami-Dade Students — Tuesday Is a Teacher Planning Day
It is the No. 2 search in America this morning, and Miami-Dade's answer is on the district calendar: Tuesday, November 3 is a teacher planning and professional learning day. No students in school — while many of those same buildings open at 7 a.m. as polling places.

Miami-Dade families can stop refreshing the search bar. The district's 2026-2027 calendar lists Tuesday, November 3, 2026 as a Teacher Planning Day and District-wide Professional Learning day — in the calendar's own words, no students in school. It is one of six teacher workdays on the district's year, alongside September 21, December 18, January 15, March 10 and March 29, and it lands on Election Day by design: the county's students stay home on the day the county votes.
Teachers and staff, to be clear, are working — planning and professional learning are the day's assignment, not a holiday. The district's next full holiday is Veterans Day on Wednesday, November 11, and the next long break is Thanksgiving Recess, November 23 through 27. What Tuesday's empty classrooms really do is hand the buildings over: a large share of Miami-Dade's 767 precincts sit inside public schools, and a polling place works better with no school day running through it — no drop-off lines competing with voter lines, no buses in the bus loop the precinct is using for parking.
For parents, the practical half of the answer is childcare on a weekday that is not a holiday, and the district calendar has carried this date since the summer, so the surprise is the search spike rather than the schedule. For voters, the read-across is simpler: if your assigned precinct is a school, it will be open for voting from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. even though it is closed for classes. Students return to a normal school day on Wednesday — one week before the Veterans Day holiday gives them another one off.
