Inter Miami Can Clinch a 2027 Concacaf Champions Cup Spot With a Win at New England on Sunday
The math resolved itself on Saturday: beat the New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium on Sunday night, and Inter Miami is in the 2027 Concacaf Champions Cup - no help needed, no tiebreakers, one spot left and Miami holding its own path to it.
Inter Miami's Sunday trip to Foxborough now carries a trophy-path stake. A win over the New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium will qualify Inter Miami for the 2027 Concacaf Champions Cup, according to World Soccer Talk's October 31 report - the scenario having clarified on Saturday, when New England and the Vancouver Whitecaps secured their own places without playing and FC Dallas, the club that could have complicated Miami's path, drew with Sporting Kansas City after Petar Musa missed a late penalty. One spot remains, and Miami can take it outright.
The fixture itself is the top of the Eastern Conference table in miniature. New England (18 wins, 10 losses, 4 draws, 58 points) has won its past three regular-season matches; Inter Miami (15-6-11, 56 points) arrives off Wednesday's 2-2 home draw with FC Cincinnati, in the clubs' 12th all-time meeting - Miami leads the series with seven wins to New England's three and one draw, according to the club's official match preview. Kickoff is 7 p.m. Eastern on Sunday, November 1, on Apple TV.
Head coach Cristian 'Kily' Gonzalez anticipated changes to his starting lineup for the trip, the report added - a rotation question with the MLS Cup playoffs one week past Sunday's game. Win, and the lineup debate becomes a celebration: a Champions Cup place banked before the regular season's final day, and second place in the East taken from the team currently holding it.
