Doncic's 42 Ends Miami's Streak: Lakers Run Away in the Third to Beat the Heat 138-117

Miami kept pace for a half in Los Angeles — then Luka Doncic scored or created the burst that turned 79-72 into 111-93, and the Heat's two-game win streak was over.

Doncic's 42 Ends Miami's Streak: Lakers Run Away in the Third to Beat the Heat 138-117 (Miami Watch News)

The Miami Heat's two-game win streak ended Monday night at Crypto.com Arena, where the Los Angeles Lakers beat them 138-117 behind a 42-point night from Luka Doncic. Doncic set the terms early — 16 points in the first quarter, including a pair of early triples, as the Lakers took a 37-30 lead — and Miami, which had beaten Atlanta and then Indiana by 20 in its NBA Cup opener, spent the rest of the night chasing him. Giannis Antetokounmpo announced the Heat's intent in the first quarter with a one-dribble, two-stride dunk over Lakers center Walker Kessler, but the matchup the night kept returning to was Doncic against every coverage Miami tried.

By halftime it was 79-72, with Doncic at 24 points, 8 assists and 4 rebounds — a first half that, the New York Post reported, made him the first Laker to score at least 20 points in the first half in five straight games since Kobe Bryant in 2007. The third quarter is where the game broke. Doncic opened it with a three-point play and a triple, found Kessler for a dunk as the lead reached 20, and Los Angeles outscored Miami 32-21 in the period to take a 111-93 lead into the fourth. The quarter lines tell the whole shape of the night: 37-30, dead even at 42-42 in the second, then 32-21 and 27-24 to the Lakers after the break.

Doncic finished with 42 points in 35 minutes and 38 seconds, on 14-of-24 shooting from the field, 6-of-15 from three and 8-of-10 at the line — his fourth 40-point game in his last five outings, one night after he had carried the Lakers past Toronto on the first night of their back-to-back. Los Angeles improves to 6-2. The Lakers did not look like the tired team; Miami, rested since Friday, looked like the one searching for a defensive answer that never arrived.

For the Heat, the loss drops them to 2-5 after the 0-4 start had finally given way to two straight wins and two straight 129-plus-point nights. The offense produced 117 on the road — the problem was a defense that gave up 79 in a half and 138 on the night, the second time in this young season an opponent has hung a season-defining scoring line on Miami. The road trip continues from here, and the film from the third quarter — Doncic scoring or creating on possession after possession — is the part that has to change first.
