Miami to Haiti, Again: American Restarts Daily Cap-Haïtien Flights After a Two-Year Pause

The only U.S. airline flying to Haiti again is flying from Miami: American's daily nonstop to Cap-Haïtien resumed Sunday with an all-Haitian, Creole-speaking crew, restoring a link South Florida's Haitian community has been without since 2024.

Miami to Haiti, Again: American Restarts Daily Cap-Haïtien Flights After a Two-Year Pause (Miami Watch News)

Some routes are just schedules. Miami to Haiti is a family connection, and on Sunday it came back. American Airlines restarted service to Haiti after a nearly two-year hiatus, now operating daily nonstop flights between Miami International Airport and Cap-Haïtien with Boeing 737 aircraft. The inaugural flight was staffed by an all-Haitian, Creole-speaking crew, the airline said — a detail that reads, in South Florida, less like a staffing note than a statement about who the route is for. 'The connection between the United States and Haiti is incredibly meaningful, which is especially true in South Florida,' Juan Carlos Liscano, American's Senior Vice President of Miami Operations, said in the airline's news release.

The pause had a violent origin. U.S. airlines suspended service to and from Haiti in 2024 amid a rise in gang violence in and around Port-au-Prince; Toussaint Louverture International Airport there was temporarily closed after bullets struck aircraft taxiing on the tarmac. The resumption is deliberately routed around that history: Cap-Haïtien, on Haiti's northern coast, is not Port-au-Prince, and American is, so far, the only U.S.-based carrier to have resumed service to the country at all. The distinction matters for every traveler weighing the route — this is a reopening, carefully placed, not a declaration that the conditions that closed the old route have vanished.

For Miami, the stakes are local in the most literal sense: one of the largest Haitian diaspora communities in the world lives within driving distance of the airport, and for two years its direct line home ran through other countries' hubs or did not run at all. A daily nonstop changes the arithmetic of family emergencies, funerals, remittances carried in person and business done face to face. The route's durability will be decided by the same security picture that ended it in 2024 — but as of this weekend, the board at MIA lists Cap-Haïtien again, and the first crew to fly it spoke Creole.
